The parents of a child rejected from Stellenbosch’s Paul Roos Gymnasium are not at all happy, believing that his race played a role in the school’s decision.
Vuyokazi Dyani’s 15-year-old son applied to enrol at Paul Roos but was denied, instead being told to enrol her child at Kayamandi. News24 reports:
The couple has accused the school of discrimination and racism after Vuyokazi Dyani was allegedly told to enrol her son at a school in Kayamandi “because that’s where he belongs”.
The parties appeared in [Stellenbosch Equality Court] on Tuesday and the case was postponed to November 12.
Dyani remained adamant that her child was denied admission because he is a black child from the township.
The 15-year-old currently attends a school in Durbanville, although he wakes up at 4AM and begins an arduous journey that includes walking a total of 6 kilometres.
The Dyanis reside just four kilometres from Paul Roos, hence their application for their son to attend the school.
Paul Roos have denied the allegations, saying that his application was unsuccessful because there was no space.
