I imagine flying a plane requires concentration and finely honed skills at the best of times, but flying one through the midst of some hardcore fog is next-level stuff.
These pilots at London’s Heathrow Airport deserve some solid pats on the back for flying in those conditions above, the heavy fog conditions causing many flights to be grounded amidst security fears.
There are certain safety measures the airport implemented to help them out, with this below from the Telegraph:
A spokeswoman at Heathrow said “we’ve got extra passenger ambassadors in the terminals to provide assistance for those travelling today”…
In foggy conditions, airports have to switch to radar and “low visibility procedures” to ensure aircraft can taxi, take-off and land safely.
This increases spacing between aircraft by up to 50 percent as they have to taxi far enough away from the runway so that their instruments do not interfere with other planes.
Fly safe pilots, and be sure to ask everyone to turn off their phones before landing because people really listen to those instructions.
