It’s the beginning of November and, after the deliciously warm days that Capetonians were treated to last week, we were hit by a daring storm that caused quite a bit of damage in parts of the peninsula.
In Sunningdale, an Eskom pylon collapsed on the roof of a house. Luckily no one was injured as the occupants had decided to stay in Darling for the evening.
A stretch of road in Strandfontein collapsed after a strong surge of water pushed over a massive concrete pillar. A stream of water generally runs underneath the stretch of road, but with the heavy downfall, the waters surged, lifting concrete slabs that support the road, ultimately knocking over one of the pillars.
The storms are a result of a black south-easter, which brought lots of moistures and unstable conditions. In Gardens, a car was crushed after a tree up-rooted and fell on it.
We’re not the only part of the country to be experiencing weird weather conditions: the rest of the country is undergoing dry and hot conditions – with reported drought in other parts of the Western Cape, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, North West and the Free State. Once again, Cape Town proves it’s a country of its own.
