Some people’s evil knows no bounds, the Islamic State and their militants certainly falling into that category. Even when expecting the worst, however, certain stories still have the capacity to surprise.
Not content with pulling off two of their favourite pastimes, killing people and destroying ancient architecture, the militants decided to combine the two in what is just another in a long line of atrocious acts. Associated Press reports:
[IS] killed three of its captives in Syria’s ancient city of Palmyra by tying them to Roman-era columns at the site, then blowing the structures up with explosives…
A Palmyra activist who goes by the name Nasser al-Thaer said that the killings of the three captives took place on Monday afternoon at the Palmyra archaeological site, located a few kilometers (miles) away from the city.
IS have become known for killing by drowning, beheading and immolation but they seem to be upping the ante of late;
Earlier this week, IS posted images on social media purported to show its members driving a tank over a captured government soldier, allegedly to revenge what it said was his driving over IS militants.
The ancient city of Palmyra has long been famed for its Roman-era relics, amongst the most famous the magnificent Temple of Bel and the iconic Arch of Triumph. Both have been reduced to rubble and other valuables have been looted and sold on the black market to further fund IS efforts.
Sometimes you really do just look at the world around you and shake your head – how has it actually come to the point where humans are so devoid of any basic decency?
