Ag ja nee not so lekker hey boet, I just found out this week that the World Health Organisation (WHO) thinks braaing is bad for you.
OK maybe not braaing per se, but they have had nasty things to say about bacon, sausages and ham – claiming that processed meats are group one carcinogens. Want to see just how terrible that news is? Click HERE.
They were also rather harsh on red meat, the staple of just about every braai here at home. So what does Jan Braai have to say about the horrible news? Below from Health24:
“It’s the one thing that all South Africans love to do, that binds them together – to sit around the fire and braai meat,” said Jan “Braai” Scallens, founder of a campaign to transform a September 24 Heritage Day holiday into National Braai Day.
“I highly doubt whether this research is going to make much of a difference to that,” he said.
In terms of meat consumption the average Saffa puts away around 60kg of meat a year, more than the global average of 42kg but still far lower than countries like the USA and Australia.
I suppose people have known for many, many years that smoking is bad and that hasn’t stopped millions. Junk food – still sells. Fizzy sugar-laden cooldrinks – gulp them down. So what chance do we have of cutting out red meat and the joys of a morning fry up?
Little to none, nou gaan ons braai.
