The two singers of Blurred Lines are appealing the jury’s decision ordering them to pay R98,2 million to Marvin Gaye’s family after the duo was accused of ripping off Marvin’s song Got to Give It Up. The Gaye’s family attorney went into a head-to-head battle during the deposition in 2014, as shown in released videos of the incident.
Words are exchanged as heated questions are asked and Pharrell answers with a vague defiance. In the first video, Pharrell is asked to explain what chords are used in certain bluegrass chord progressions:
I’m not a teacher… You should check it out. I’m not here to teach you music.
He was then asked to read two notes on a page:
I’m not comfortable with this. I know ‘Every Good Boy Does Fine’ and ‘FACE’ [a pneumonic device used to remember the notes in treble staff]… I can’t answer you at this time.”
The attorney then states that Pharrell can’t actually read music. Pharrell replied that he wasn’t comfortable. Social Media obviously went off with assumptions of Pharrell’s actual ability to read music:
But what’s great is Robin Thicke’s video – and the excuse for all the “misinformation” in interview on the song:
When I give interviews, I tell whatever I want to say to help sell records … With all due respect, I was high and drunk every time I did an interview last year.
