As the #FeesMustFall protests gain momentum across the country, students who attend the University of Johannesburg joined forces with Wits this morning in an effort to shut down Johannesburg. A group of Wits students went to UJ’s Banting Road campus to encourage students to join the #FeesMustFall campaign. This resulted in the closure of Banting Road and students are now marching from one campus to another.
Yesterday, UJ held SRC elections and it was decided that they would concentrate on the process before deciding on whether or not to join in the national protests. They then took to the streets:
They carried placards that read “Free Education Must No Longer Be A Rhetoric” and “The Born Free Generations Ask Their Parents: Where Is The Freedom If I Must Fight For Education?”
This news came with the announcement that Univen, located in Limpopo, saw thousands of its students protesting at the campus’s entrance, barricading anyone from joining in.
The students will later hand over a memorandum demanding that the university should not increase registration and tuition fees next year. Univen spokesperson, Takalani Dzaga says they will start negotiations with the incoming Student Representative Council.
