After a second half performance that heralded 50 points no one in the rugby fraternity would accuse the Boks of being toothless. You know where this one is headed don’t you?
A photo snapped by Kevin Quigley seems to show Frans Malherbe doing his best Twilight impersonation, USA lock Matt Trouville on the receiving end of what doesn’t look good for the Bok prop. This below from the Daily Mail:
When shown the photograph, Trouville told team USA officials he could not recall the incident, although he was wearing padding across his shoulders. A spokesman for the South Africa team, who was also presented with the picture, said: ‘We were not aware of that but if the judicial guys make something of it that is up to them.’
The official match press officer said it would be a situation for ‘citing officials’ to review if the alleged incident was missed by referee Pascal Gauzere. He certainly seemed to make no issue of it at the time.
True, if he had seen it no doubt we would have gone to the TMO and endeared another painful exchange that dragged on for longer than necessary. How about a close up of the incident then?
Perhaps we need to look at preparing what I like to call the Luis Suarez defence, this below an actual quote from his written defence after biting Italian Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup:
“I lost my balance, making my body unstable and falling on top of my opponent. At that moment, I hit my face against the player, leaving a small bruise on my cheek and a strong pain in my teeth”.
Yes, how dare that American thrust his shoulder into the mouth of dear Frans?
On a more serious note no doubt the world’s press will go to town on us for this one, we have long had a reputation for foul play (deserved or not) and England’s press are currently a rabid bunch after the tripe their own team has served up.
Expect headlines including words like Scumboks, BiteMark du Plessis, Eben Etzebyt, Tande Mtawarira and Willie le Chew to appear in the not-too-distant future. Yes, fine, Frans MalHonger Herber too.
