There are many iconic moments from the 1995 Rugby World Cup – Francois Pienaar and Madiba with the trophy, Pieter Hendriks pumping his fist after rounding David Campese in the tournament’s opening game and THAT drop goal from dearest Joel amongst the greatest.
Also if those videos above don’t give you goosebumps I don’t want to be your friend any more, have you no heart?
You can’t mention 1995’s tournament without talking about Jonah Lomu, the human wrecking ball whose four tries against England in the semi-final included his trampling of English fullback Mike Catt. Lomu went on to score 15 World Cup tries, a record many thought would never be broken.
But, and this is a big but, they didn’t account for Bryan Habana, His hat-trick last night saw the flying winger equal the great Lomu, and Habana was only one fumble away from breaking the big man’s record as he almost bagged his fourth.
As we lick our lips in anticipation (not you Frans Malherbe, not you) here’s a two-part compilation of Jonah’s best moments from a glittering career.
I’m sure one day we’ll be sharing a similar tribute to Habana, although we’d like to think some of the best may still be to come.
