The anticipation of which structure the #rhodesmustfall activists will target next has been building up since the original statue’s fall back in April.
And now, it seems, the group has found it – in the form of a jungle gym.
Most of you should know of the wagon-shaped jungle gym that has a prominent place on Sea Point’s popular and picturesque promenade. Here’s a little reminder, just in case you don’t.
Some residents grew up with the Voortrekker-honouring structure for years. But it appears that restless students from UCT are moving onwards and outwards and will now be targeting the jungle gym on all forms of social media – and in person – with the hashtag #oxwagonmustfall.
Catching wind of the anticipating attack early on, proud local residents are up-in-arms as the news gathers speed. David Goldberg, a Sea Point local for generations, is one of those who has a strong family tie to the jungle gym, especially the oxen.
How can they target something just for its shape and what it represents? Does no one care about tradition anymore? The ox-wagon jungle gym was played on by my father, and his father. Even my mother’s side used to sit on the oxen and watch the boys show off back in their day.
David is gathering support from local residents in an effort to create an anti-oxwagonmustfall group, aptly named #oxwagonwillriseagain. The group is aiming to set up a schedule, allocating time slots for members to guard the statue against any faeces.
We are terrified that human faeces will touch the ox-wagon. We need to make sure that any suspect buckets are spotted well in advance and we have enough time to deter any attack.
We’re doing this for Sea Point’s legacy and our children.
But UCT students aren’t afraid. Although hush-hush about their plans of attack, word on the ground is that it the first advance will take place this Friday evening when most of Sea Point’s occupants will be having dinner. No one was available for comment.
