As anticipation for the new James Bond starts to peak, Sam Smith’s theme song for Spectre has, unsurprisingly, received a variety of views from the Twitter-atti and Bond alumni.
While Roger Moore called the song “very haunting and wonderfully orchestrated”, others have been less complimentary.
From “worst Bond theme ever” to “good enough, but not a classic”, listeners were unimpressed to say the least. But you know how people and their opinions go. It seems that those who had a closer connection to the franchise felt a deeper connection, with one person being left “in a broken heap” and another proclaiming “If you’re not moved by this song you don’t have a pulse.” Shew.
Sam is the first solo British male to perform a Bond film’s theme song since 1964. Although the last theme sung by Adele peaked at number two on the charts, no Bond song has ever topped the UK chart.
But Sam isn’t really worried about what people think of the song. After reading the script he and his songwriting partner, Jimmy Napes, wanted to create a song that was “timelessly classic”.
This isn’t about me, about my life. I just hope people listen to it and think, ‘That’s Bond’.
You can stream the song on Spotify or download it through iTunes. Or wait till it’s released for realsies on Youtube.
