First off, I’d just like to ask what teenager plays with Barbie dolls? That’s what I thought, too.
But anyway, the Lammily doll or otherwise referred to as the so-called “Normal Barbie” not only has ‘realistic’ body proportions and cellulite, but now comes with her very own period – and pads.
The $10 (R140) Period Party extension kit is now available and is described as “the fun way to explain the menstrual cycle to kids,” by the Lammily doll creator Nickolay Lamm. She wants to start a conversation about periods and the stigma attached to the female phenomenon.
The kit comes with an educational pamphlet as well as pair of doll underwear, 19 coloured pads, a calendar and stickers to track periods.
What the actual f***. Not even I’m this organised. Although the video ad for the Period Party kit shows that young girls might prefer to learn about their menstrual cycles from their doll rather than their parents, I’m not too sure.
The Lammily Doll was created in 2014 and comes with a range of sticker-extension packs to encourage conversations about other taboos, like cellulite, freckles, acne, scrapes, bruises, scars and moles. The doll is normal as it has been modelled after an average 19 year old woman’s measurements.
I hope that manual adds that stretch marks aren’t like stickers that can just be peeled off.
