It’s sometimes difficult, when one looks at the donations made to charitable causes by the likes of Bill and Melinda Gates, to think that we can make that much of a difference.
Their billions can do wonders the world over but that shouldn’t stop us from thinking locally about ways we can enact real, meaningful change ourselves. One such thinker is Dave Hutchison, founder of Sexy Socks, who has a heart-warming story to tell. Over to you Dave…
Sexy Socks is not just another sock company. We are a sock company with a social mission. Our mission? To warm the toes of every child in South Africa. With every pair of socks we sell, we give a pair of school socks to a child in need in South Africa.
They are bright. They are loud. And they are outrageous. Sexy Socks are made from bamboo – which makes them environmentally sustainable, anti-bacterial, anti-odour, and softer than your mother’s touch – and they are made locally here in Cape Town. But most importantly, we have given away almost 2 000 pairs of school socks to date.
South Africa needs entrepreneurs. South Africa needs young people who are willing to put their heart and soul into starting a business and effecting change in their communities. South Africa needs people to give back. Sexy Socks’ mission is to warm the toes of South Africa’s most vulnerable. But in so doing, we are placed in a unique position to educate young people on the virtues of entrepreneurship and hopefully inspire them to start something themselves one day. The video clip speaks for itself, but it sets the scene of our latest Sock Drop where we gave away 1 472 pairs of school socks to learners at Marconi Beam Primary School in the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Cape Town. This is why we started this business.
This should be a reminder to us all that making a difference to those less fortunate than ourselves is often as easy as simply deciding to do so.
If you want to find out more about Sexy Socks head to THEIR SITE and check out their funky, trendy and unique designs – you might just end up warming the feet of a local schoolkid in the process.
