It was a busy weekend for traffic cops in the City of Cape Town, although one drunk driver in particular is grabbing headlines for his outrageous speeding.
A man on Durbanville Avenue was clocked driving at over 200 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, running a roadblock and becoming involved in a high-speed car chase with traffic officials. This below from eNCA:
During the chase, the driver collided with another vehicle, and drove through a speed check where he was clocked driving at 204 kilometres per hour in a 60 km per hour zone.
He eventually lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree at the intersection of Durban Road and Frans Conradie Drive.
JP Smith, the city’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, was not impressed by the rogue driver’s behaviour:
By behaving in this manner, this motorist not only put his own life and the lives of other road users and members of the public at risk, but also caused himself unnecessary problems…
He should not have been behind the wheel drunk but if he had simply stopped when asked, he would have faced a single charge. Now he is having to deal with an additional charge of reckless and negligent driving and will probably have to face the insurance nightmare that comes with crashing his vehicle and colliding with another motorist. I hope this serves as a warning to the other would-be cowboys on our roads.
Come guys, you know what to do after you’ve had one too many and aren’t in the right shape to drive home.
