South Africa, bless, has problems, but thanks to our laws, it also has a very open heart. Well, at least it did – the government seems to be buckling down on our once people-loving constitution.
Anyways, after various countries, from Germany to New Zealand, opened their boarders and homes to Syrian asylum seekers, South Africa is yet to be asked by individuals or any of the European countries caught up in the crisis to do the same.
Why? Because we have opened our doors since around ’94 and now we’re kind of full.
South Africa already sees the highest amount of asylum seekers in the world as one country. Having a good human heart is important, but having the capacity and resources to process and deal with humanitarian efforts is important.
This new wave of political leadership based on humanitarian values has overwhelmed the do-gooders of the world, making them proud of the decisions made by international politicians and influential individuals to accept those who need a safe place to live.
But hold your horses: this doesn’t mean South Africa hasn’t helped Syrians.
Gift of the Givers, the South African-based disaster relief NGO, has built two hospitals in Syria which have helped around 300 000 patients in the past two years. The NGO is headed by Imtiaz Sooliman who stated that although the first hospital was built with the aid of South African doctors, it is now staffed by locals because work permits are still a thing.
We are fortunate to have saved many lives in that hospital. When people see the hospital, they collapse out of shock that South Africa is supporting it. It is the best facility in the entire country.
Boom. Goes to show that when non-corrupt South Africans does something, it is done in the best way.
