Some people just can’t handle the heat, although the humid conditions at Flushing Meadows would have done little to ease Jack Sock’s pain.
Yes, that is the unfortunate player’s name, Sock succumbing to the 33C temperatures on court during his match against Ruben Bemelmans. The 22-year-old was actually leading by two sets to one at the time, although the scoreline was rendered irrelevant when he was forced to retire after receiving treatment.
Here’s what Sock had to say post-match from Bleacher Report:
Playing in the US Open is the biggest and most important moment of the season for me, so having to retire from my match today is extremely disappointing. I want to thank everyone for their support and can’t wait to be back next year. I feel better already and look forward to playing Davis Cup.
Sock is actually American himself, although he grew up in Kansas. Well Jack (and I apologise for this one in advance), we’re not in Kansas any more.
