It has taken her a while, but Barbie has finally ditched Ken in exchange for adventure, coffee and the freedom to wear thick-framed specs. To celebrate her new found freedom, she hit up an Instagram account to show off her new lifestyle. She has even rebranded herself and now goes by the title ‘Socality Barbie’ – and authenticity and originality is her game.
As you might have guessed from the poor lack of outfit changes, this is actually a parody Instagram account, attempting to satirise millennial hipsters who desire originality and authenticity, yet fail because, well, they’re all the same. The account is run by a wedding photographer from Portland – the motherland of hipsters – and wants to keep Socality Barbie’s brand intact by remaining anonymous.
Predominantly using #authenticity and #original, the Portlandian wanted to point out to the world that the photos she was seeing were repetitive, taken with the same background and even using similar kinds of captions.
People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions. I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?’
While Socality Barbie’s creator understands the popularity of these “pretty” photos, she calls the lifestyle “dishonest.”
Nobody actually lives like this. And it’s so overdone that it’s becoming boring.
There we go hipsters, that’s pretty much how everyone thinks of you, except you.
