The Mongrel Mob, a gang in New Zealand, are rather fond of ink. The difference between them and your mate, of course, is that they aren’t getting the Arabic symbol for ‘peace’ tattooed on the small of their back (or Chinese for ‘serenity’, or Sanskrit for ‘cultural appropriation’, you get my drift), they’re going full Mike Tyson and dipping into the world of face tattoos.
A photographer called Jono Rotman managed to enter the inner sanctum, capturing some chilling one-on-one shots of gang members in their houses over a period of six years. Below are some of the more haunting with the text from CNN:
The Mongrel Mob started in the 1960’s. Its members are known for their extensive tattoos and wearing an emblem of a British bulldog with a Nazi helmet…
The Mob appropriated Nazi party symbolism as their own but they are not white supremacists, Rotman said. ..
One of Rotman’s subjects shared his grandfather’s reasoning for choosing the swastika. “(He told me) ‘You think you’re the master race? Well, I’ll take your skin and put it on. Now who is the master race?’ “
