It is hard to believe there has ever been a more vindictive presidential candidate than Donald Trump. Perhaps others are just far better at hiding their disdain, playing by the rules that have governed the pre-election build-up since democracy began, but Trump does not subscribe to those rules and the people seem to love him for it.
Now we have covered at length his lack of love for America’s immigrant population, building the Wall and all that other gibberish, and that attack continued with the Instagram video he posted yesterday. That video can be seen up top, the Instragram post below…
As the folks at Huffington Post have reported, Donald was rather selective with which portion of Jeb’s speech from last year he chose to use. Here’s the bit that came beforehand:
“The way I look at this is someone who comes to our country because they couldn’t come legally, they come to our country because their families — the dad who loved their children — was worried that their children didn’t have food on the table,” he said at the time. “And they wanted to make sure their family was intact, and they crossed the border because they had no other means to work to be able to provide for their family.”
After the video received much traction on social media the Jeb Bush camp released a statement of their own:
“While Donald Trump was still supporting liberal, soft-on-crime politicians, Jeb Bush accumulated an eight-year record of cracking down on violent criminals as governor of Florida,” said Kristy Campbell, a spokeswoman for Bush. “Mr. Trump’s immigration plan is not conservative; would violate the Constitution; and would cost hundreds of billions of dollars, which he will likely attempt to pay for through massive tax hikes.”
I don’t really like saying this but perhaps that is where some of the genius of Donald Trump’s campaign lies. Do the American people really care about his actual policies? Not if you ask the Washington Post:
…the way these people decide whom to vote for is based on their perceptions — and often misperceptions — of the candidates. The idea that the average undecided voter is looking for deep dives into policy from the candidates before making up his/her mind is a farce…
The people who like Trump not only believe he will take care of all of the problems facing the country when he gets elected but a big part of why they like him is because his message is: Leave it to me. I’ve got this…
Trump appeals to a desire within a decent-sized chunk of the electorate which has little interest in knowing the ins and out of policies and would rather simply elect someone they trust to handle things.
I think there are quite a few of us out there who are rather torn over the whole affair. Who wouldn’t want to see this buffoon attempting to navigate the murky waters of international politics, the bloopers would be endless and shows like Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show would basically have their scripts written for them.
On the other hand, how much damage could he do with four years at the helm of one of the world’s superpowers? Maybe it’s a good thing America decides and we can just rubberneck from a distance.
