Guys, we’re going to be okay. Kinda.
A recent survey asked over 14 000 expats from countries all over the world to take part in an InterNations survey to find out which is the best country to raise your kids among other things. The participants had to rate the country they were residing in at the time, covering a whole range of queries, from who they are, where they’re from and why they’re living abroad.
The results were super interesting. South Africa was ranked 18th by the participants, whilst the UK didn’t even make it into the Top 20, lagging below at 22nd.
But here’s the catch. Although South Africa rated in the top 20 overall, we only did so because we were outstanding in two out of the four sub-categories: Availability of Childcare and Education & Cost of Childcare and Education. We were actually voted the worst destination, along with Kenya, for children’s health and safety. We also did astoundingly badly in the Quality of Education category.
The Top 3 countries were found to be Austria, Finland and Sweden where education, inexpensive daily childcare, parental leave and a range of leisure activities all help to make them attractive places for families because of excellent children’s health and safety, and a good family life in general.
But you know what? I think the lack of safety in this country gives us our very own education: Street Smart Sass. Check out the full survey here.
