If you want to go down in history as a hero you would do well to foil an attempted terrorist attack aboard a train in France. Just ask US airman Spencer Stone, currently a very popular man after he sprung into action and, along with two other Americans with whom he was travelling, managed to stop a man intent on doing serious damage.
The incident happened on Friday with the train travelling from Amsterdam to Paris. That video up top captures the immediate aftermath, and below you can see Stone recount the incident yesterday during a news conference at the US ambassador’s residence in Paris.
The other two heroes are Anthony Sadler and National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, with some news outlets throwing Briton Chris Norman’s name into the mix. All four will be rewarded with the Legion d’Honneur, France’s highest honour, by French president Francois Hollande. Some information on the man they foiled below from the BBC:
French authorities say the suspect being questioned, Moroccan national Ayoub El-Khazzani, 25, has links to radical Islamism.
He was flagged up to French authorities by their Spanish counterparts in February 2014.
He is reported to have lived in France, Spain, and Belgium and to have travelled to Syria.
Well played US military men (and that Briton), I’m sure there’s a movie and book deal on the not-too-distant horizon.
