The northern Chinese port city of Tianjin was the scene of a massive explosion last night and the footage capturing the incident has to be seen to be believed.
There are so far 44 deaths attributed to the explosion, that number expected to grow as hundreds have been injured – some in critical condition. The city is home to 15 million people so whilst the loss of life remains tragic the number does seem remarkably low. BusinessInsider reports:
The blasts reportedly erupted in a shipment of explosives, with the fireball and shockwave seen and felt from several kilometres away, such as in the video above.
According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, the first explosion was equivalent to 3 tonnes of TNT and the second blast 21 tonnes of TNT.
It’s worth taking a look at the photos of devastation just to take in the scope of the damage done.
