It looks like the residents of Imizamo Yethu and the surrounding areas may be in for a rocky few days after some hair-raising altercations over the weekend.
After noticing a post in the crime section of OurHood we became aware of the gang violence in the area, violence that escalated to such a degree that the folks over at eNCA picked up on the story. Residents apparently sought refuge at the local police station as tempers flared:
According to one community member the cause of the violence is from the presence of repeat offenders and high ranking ex-prison gang members who have been released and are allegedly operating criminal activities in the area.
“The generals are being released from prison and some of the kids who have been in and out of prison are also being released and they are bringing their activities from the cells and into the streets,” said Mzingisi Nkayi of the Imizamo Yethu Community Policing Forum…
“A couple of boys were stabbed earlier in the day but we were glad to see the police even though they not from this area.”
There have been calls for those in the area to drop off food and blankets at the police station for the families seeking refuge, around 20 women and more children currently staying at the police station.
