We all like to believe we are imbued with a certain degree of common sense growing up in South Africa. I would even go as far as to say it’s something we take pride in, which makes it all the more surprising then that we tend to leave our brains behind at the campsite when exploring some of our wilder areas.
Visiting the Kruger National Park is a must for every South African or tourist wanting to experience the untamed outdoors, although in the wake of some recent incidents many people have scratched the Kruger from their bucket list. Do not fret would be travellers, SafariNow has provided us with a simplified list of how to survive the Kruger National Park. This plain and simple guide will have you enjoying your Kruger experience without the fear of being squashed by elephants, chased by leopards or attacked by lions.
Let’s get the ball rolling then, each tip accompanied by a video that illustrates why you might want to pay attention…
Keep your windows closed:
This incident below received much publicity and eventually resulted in the leopard being put down. Whilst it is difficult to lay blame at the ranger’s door it is a reminder that we should exercise caution regarding having our windows open.
Lock your doors:
It seems strange that we will insist on locking our doors when driving through what we deem a dodgy area, then drive around happily like a ready-made meal in a tin can when in areas where predators occur.
Never roam to close to the water’s edge:
If you’re familiar with the bush you’ll be well aware that both crocodiles and hippos rank amongst Africa’s top killers. Where possible try and avoid skirting too close to the water’s edge to avoid the chances of an unwanted encounter.
Approach the Big 5 cautiously:
They’re called the Big 5 for a reason, you know, and whilst they will generally try and avoid getting up close and personal with tourists that isn’t always the case.
Do not provoke the animals:
Now you would think this one goes without saying but it often pays to keep your distance when in a vehicle. You never know what rub a rhino up the wrong way…
With these handy tips in mind you should be all good to go on your Kruger adventure. If you’re unsure where to stay, or just want to find out more about one of our country’s crown jewels, we recommend you visit the SafariNow website and check out their extensive list of options.
Good luck out there.
