As if the police in our country don’t already have a tough enough job they must now deal with what looks like some criminal inside assistance, the theft of a cashbox from a mall in Rosettenville resulting in the death of a metro police officer.

In the CCTV video you can see a security guard exit a Pick n Pay store carrying a cashbox. He is then confronted by two men who are up to no good. News24 reports:

The second man, who is holding a bag, takes out what looks like a bottle and pours its contents over the cash box while the security guard stands calmly, seemingly allowing him.

The metro police officer, walking towards the store, observes what is happening and attempts to draw his gun.

He is quickly attacked by the man using the crutch. After a bit of wrestling between the two men, the officer is seen falling to the ground and lying still. People in the area are seen running in different directions.

Now here’s the bit that has led many to believe the security guard was a willing participant in the robbery. As the two thieves can be seen fleeing the scene the security guard shuffles away, leaving the officer lying on the floor with three gunshot wounds.

The red stream that can be seen towards the end of the video is the anti-theft dye, rendering any money inside the cashbox unusable. That will come as scant consolation to the family and friends of the 60-year-old officer, gunned down in broad daylight by men who clearly have no regard for human life.
