R3 million might not get you a mansion in Camps Bay but it will get you one of Soweto’s most historic and beloved houses, the former home of well known Soweto resident Dr Johnny Mosendane.
The architecture of the home has long been revered, winning a multitude of awards for designers Michael Sutton and David Walker. Built in 1979 it is believed that the property will prove very popular with potential buyers. Fin24 reports:
Trish Luthuli of Pam Golding Properties in Gauteng, said the residence has historic significance to the community and is one of the most valuable properties to ever go on the residential property market in Moroko (sic), Soweto.
“The late Dr Mosendane was an icon in the Soweto community and his remarkable five-bedroomed property, which is situated in Rockville, Moroka, is a landmark and one of the best-known residential properties in the area,” said Luthuli.
“The design has split-level reception rooms with a wood-burning fireplace, unusual barrel vaulted ceilings and sky roofs. It is a most remarkable all-brick design, very much in the Michael Sutton mould, and there is certainly nothing comparable to it within the Soweto area, or indeed in Johannesburg.”
The listing on Pam Golding’s site has a number of awesome photos (HERE) but we’ll just drop this little number on you…
Luthuli also talked up the financial opportunities owning the house could bring for a wily entrepeneur, whether that is via accommodation or an events venue.
So where does this property rank on the spectrum when it comes to buying property in Soweto?
The average home in Soweto sells for approximately R300 000, but there is a strong demand for homes up to R750 000. One can obtain a two-bedroomed home with a garden for approximately R750 000 in an area such as Meadowlands. More upmarket homes between R1.5m to R2m are also popular.
You would certainly be dabbling in the deep end of the property market, but for a house with such history you wouldn’t think this will remain unsold for long.
