Airbnb is on a roll at the moment. A couple of days ago we told you how the CEO got himself in hot water with some fairly disparaging comments about South Africans during a flying PR visit. (Read that article HERE.)
Media talk for their recently launched TV ad is also gathering momentum, and unfortunately it’s not doing them any favours. The spot features a waddling baby heading towards a front door, while a breathy holier than thou voiceover asks us “is man kind”. It is spectacularly wanky and pretentious – a sentiment shared by many, as QZ reports:
Understandably, the reactions to the campaign haven’t been great. While Adweek called the spot ambitious, “Gothamist had less encouraging words, comparing the commercial to an “arthouse horror movie.” The Next Web called it creepy as hell.”
It baffles me that Airbnb thought this ad would resonate. Consumers are far too cynical and brand savvy to buy into something like this, especially when it comes from a company that flogs holiday homes.
