Woody Allen is a creepy little man, I think we can all agree on that. He might be able to put together a cracking movie but that doesn’t mean he is popular the world over, not by a long shot.
First of all there are the allegations that Allen sexually abused Dylan Farrow, the seven-year-old daughter of his then partner Mia Farrow. Allen has denied these claims but Dylan did pen a letter detailing exactly how the abuse went down in great detail, something you read about HERE. It is worth checking out THESE ‘undeniable facts’ regarding the abuse too, they do make for jarring reading.
Now that you’re up to speed on that let’s move onto the next topic of discussion which is, rather similarly, Allen dating the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow. He began that relationship, by the way, whilst still dating Mia. Here’s him discussing his relationship with now wife Soon-Yi Previn, as published in Vanity Fair:
I started the relationship with her and I thought it would just be a fling…It wouldn’t be serious, but it had a life of its own. And I never thought it would be anything more. Then we started going together, then we started living together, and we were enjoying it. And the age difference didn’t seem to matter. It seemed to work in our favor (sic) actually…
She enjoyed being introduced to many, many things that I knew from experience, and I enjoyed showing her those things…
I’m 35 years older, and somehow, through no fault of mine or hers, the dynamic worked. I was paternal…She responded to someone paternal. I liked her youth and energy. She deferred to me, and I was happy to give her an enormous amount of decision making just as a gift and let her take charge of so many things.
He did then directly address the impact the sexual abuse allegations have had on how his movies are received and the crowds that go to watch them:
“I would say no. I always had a small audience. People did not come in great abundance and they still don’t, and I’ve maintained the same audience over the years.” He adds that the speculation has “no meaning in the way I make movies, too. I never see any evidence of anything in my private life resonating in film.”
I might disagree with you there Woody, I would guess the stinging allegations against your name will have turned many people off your oddball movies.
