The tale of a daring prison escape from New York’s Clinton Correctional Facility dominated the headline for much of last month. As more details emerged of Richard Matt and David Sweat breaking free the intrigue grew, the runaways eventually nabbed with Matt being killed and Sweat giving himself up.
Yesterday saw prison seamstress Joyce Mitchell plead guilty to helping the men escape and some rather sordid details came to light regarding her relationship with the men. Over to NBC News:
[She] told investigators that she performed sexual acts on one of the men and sent X-rated selfies to the other and knew the duo planned to kill her husband, police documents show…
In April, she and Matt were alone in the tailor shop where she was an instructor when he grabbed her and her kissed her, she said…
In May, she said, Matt asked her to perform oral sex and she did, out of fear, she said. On other occasions, Matt would come to her desk wearing a big coat in which he had cut a hole so that Mitchell could touch his genitals…
Mitchell described how Matt had her bring certain items to him: padded gloves, glasses with lights on them, a screwdriver-type bit and, in early May, hacksaw blades.
Those were ultimately the tools that the men used to fashion their escape route, slicing into the underground piping system and slipping out unnoticed. Mitchell had also agreed to pick the men up after their escape but reneged on her end of the bargain:
“I know I had agreed to help them escape and run away with them, but I panicked and couldn’t follow through with the rest of the plan,” she explained. “I really do love my husband and he’s the reason.”
It remains to be seen whether her husband Lyle buys that story, given that the plan also included her providing pills to the inmates which were meant to be used to kill the poor man.
They say hindsight is 20/20 but if dear old Joyce thought this story was going to have a happy ending she was sadly mistaken.
