I don’t want to give you folks from Port Elizabeth the satisfaction but it looks like, just for the day, we have stolen the title of ‘the Windy City’.
The southeaster kicked into overdrive yesterday and this morning, reaching speeds of between 40kmh and 50kmh. This forced the closure of certain routes as officials feared for the safety of road users. News24 reports:
Cape Town traffic chief Kenny Africa said: ”The winds are extra strong so we have closed the Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 and motorists must use alternate routes.”
This was after four trucks were blown over by the wind near the tunnel on Tuesday night. The Bain’s Kloof Pass was also closed after trees were blown onto the road.
Chapman’s Peak is still closed after a six ton wedge of weathered sandstone became dislodged, according to the City of Cape Town’s department of transport.
Of course the fine people of Cape Town took to Twitter to share their pictures of the wind wreaking havoc…
Rumour has it we are through the worst of it so here’s hoping you didn’t wake up to any damage around the crib.
And no PE, we only borrowed the title, it still belongs to you.
