If you’ve ever taken a stroll around the streets of Woodstock you will be greeted by many sights. Smiling car guards zipping in and out of traffic, bearded hipsters staring wistfully into the distance whilst pondering the meaning of life and a host of street art that showcases the talents of our local men and women.
It is that street art we will focus on because, to be honest, it really is world class. If you happen to be able to knock off a little early on Friday (or can time your lunch break well) and want to learn more, we have something of a treat in store for you, a VoiceMap Group Audio Walk starting at the Woodstock Exchange.
Starting at 1:30 PM this Friday (July 24) you can meet local artist Rashied as he guides you through the streets on this audio tour, telling the story of Woodstock’s art for the last time, just days before tragically passing away in a fire. His passion for the area spans a lifetime, and his inspirational community-building work with both tourists and locals says a lot about what it means to have a big heart in a rapidly changing area.
[A quick side note – there will be a second tour taking place Saturday morning at 11:30 in case you can’t make the Friday tour, now you have no excuse.]
Here’s the part that you tech-lovers will get all giddy about because Rashied won’t actually be there to guide you in person. Instead, together with the others in your group, you will download Rashied’s story to your phone and let him guide you that way. Here’s how to do just that:
1) Install VoiceMap by going to iPhone (HERE) or Android (HERE)
2) Sign in or create an account
3) Select Cape Town from the list of cities
4) Then select “Woodstock Street Art Tour”
5) Tap on the red download button. The audio walk costs R29.99. You can pay using your iTunes and Google Wallet accounts. Allow ALL the files to finish downloading before you close the app.
6) When the download is finished, the download button will change from red to green, and instead of seeing the price, you’ll see the word “Start”. You’re ready to go!
Here’s a selection of street art the area has to offer…
The walks will start from the Woodstock Exchange (where you might want to grab a bite to eat and have a snoop around) so arrive on time and get ready to get your art on.
