You’d better be, because it’s coming to a suburb near you soon. The coffee behemoth has announced they’ll be opening their first (sub-Saharan) African spot somewhere in Jo’burg in 2016, in partnership with Taste Holdings.
I suppose it’s good news, in that it means more choice for consumers, more jobs, and so on. On the other hand, one of the best things about Cape Town is its independent coffee culture, (which I think it’s fair to say shits all over places like London and New York) and relative lack of giant global retailers. So I feel a bit apprehensive about someone like Starbucks potentially upsetting the apple cart. But that’s just my opinion. (I may also be biased because I once had a Starbucks frappe addiction that caused a hole in my pocket for a good year.)
