Greece is well and truly in the shit, that is accepted as fact in every corner of the globe. Sometimes, however, it takes a picture to really tug on the human heartstrings and bring out the compassion within.
A photo of 77-year-old Greek Giorgos Chatzifotiadis crying outside of a bank has gone viral, pretty much summing up how the everyday Greek citizen is affected in the midst of the crisis. There is a shred of good news coming out of the story as Huffington Post reports:
[He] was photographed sobbing on the ground after being unable to withdraw a pension on behalf of his wife…Gap Finance CEO James Koufos who lives in Sydney, Australia, saw the image, and with the help of his mother, identified the 77-year-old as an old friend of his father’s.
While he’s miles away from the crisis, Koufos called on people across social media this past Sunday to help track the man down so that he could help pay Chatzifotiadis’ pension.
Koufos’ efforts seem to have paid off as he was able to track down Chatzifotiadis…The CEO now plans to fly to Greece this Saturday to meet with the 77-year-old.
Of course it will take more than one Aussie CEO to drag Greece out this mess but at least the old-timer has received a helping hand. Spare a thought then for the rest of the citizens of Greece, their troubles may be just beginning.
