When I was at school, the kids who voluntarily did their homework had zero street cred. Being a dosser was cool, learning something because we had no choice but to be there. Privilege in all its glory. If ever I need reminding of that, I’ll look at these photos of a Filipino boy doing his homework outside a McDonald’s.
As the Sydney Morning Herald reports, the photos went viral on Facebook after a medical student spotted the young lad, Daniel Cabrera, sitting in the car park as she walked home. The fact his family often sleeps rough because they have no electricity at home doesn’t stop him from getting his work done, as the nine-year-old has plans to become a policeman or doctor.
As the student who photographed him, Joyce Gilos Torrefranca said:
I’m fortunate my parents were able to send me to school, I seldom go to coffee shops to study, but this kid just hit me. You really don’t need much, you just have to be determined and focused on the things that you want to achieve.”
Wise words indeed.
