Propaganda goes hand in hand with conflict and war, we all know that. But you’d be forgiven for thinking that it would have improved, somehow gotten smarter, as the years roll and we learn from what’s been done before.
Well, if these anti-ISIS cartoons from the USA are anything to go by, they haven’t. These puppies have been doing the rounds on social media, their purpose being to dissuade people from joining ISIS.
Perhaps there’s a carefully thought-out strategy that we’re just not seeing, but as Gawker writes:
One gets a sense more of desperation than targeted effectiveness. Cartoons and words can have a tactical impact, but in the overall scheme of things, it is almost as if ISIS is happy to be marked as killers, rapists and even child abusers, anything to separate them from Western-imposed sensibilities.
I’m asking myself if a picture of ISIS fighters feeding white babies to the devil would stop teenage girls on their way to Syria in their tracks. Something tells me not, as whoever is in charge of recruitment over there is obviously doing something right. It’s also hard to ignore the fact that the hook-nosed, swarthy depictions of Arab men could be lifted right out of an anti-Semitic cartoon.
Maybe it’s time ‘Merica does some recruitment of its own… time for a new White House cartoonist?
