There was a nautical flavour to this year’s Durban July as guests took to the racecourse dressed for ‘The Captain’s Table’… amongst other things. Whilst there was no shortage of sailor hats, there were also some pretty… what’s the word we’re looking for… ‘eclectic’ outfits on display. Whilst we’re all in favour of self-expression, it does seem like this particular event has turned into a bit of a fancy dress parade, where seemingly anything goes. Here’s our pick of the best, the worst and the downright random.
We’ll start on a high note: (don’t get excited, there really weren’t many) Media personality Bonang Matheba looked stunning in a floor-length yellow dress.
In a nod to the fantastical creations seen at Ascot, this model worked the ‘Ship as a hat’ look to perfection.
The men kept it simple with Sailor hats.
Let’s hope the SA Navy are in better shape than this oke…
Easily the best outfit of the day, the lady on the right took her creative inspiration from, yes you guessed it, Nkandla.
Yikes!
Double yikes!
There you have it. A veritable feast of style.
