The latest farm attack statistics are in and, as expected, we still have a crisis on our hands.
The scourge is worst in Limpopo province, having overtaken Gauteng as the region with the least favourable record. The numbers, compiled by agriculture union TAU-SA and activist group AfriForum, show that the first half of 2015 saw 27 murders and 116 separate attacks. TimesLive reports:
A total of 1 747 farm murders and 3‚542 attacks took place between 1990 and mid-year 2015‚ AfriForum and TAU SA said in a statement and via social media…
General Chris van Zyl‚ assistant head manager of TAU SA‚ said farm attacks are becoming increasingly brutal and as well as fatal.
Ernst Roets‚ Deputy CEO of AfriForum‚ said government should declare farm murders a priority crime due to the frequency of attacks‚ the brutality involved‚ and the role farmers play in South Africa.
Two of AfriForum’s researchers are headed to Australia this week in an attempt to drum up worldwide attention regarding the sobering statistics, the hope being that the watching eyes of the world will exert pressure on our national government to prioritise efforts to curb the attacks.
Good luck guys, feel free to take Steve Hofmeyr with you as a goodwill gift.
