In this day and age of smartphones, it must be harder to get away with being one of those fishermen, the ones who claim to have reeled in a monster but somehow failed to get photographic evidence. It’s ‘pics or it didn’t happen’ these days, so good thing Renier Nortje managed to snap a picture of his prize catch.
Nortje was fishing at Botha beach, close to Glentana on the Garden Route, when he felt the bite of a 1,8 metre, 60.1 kilogram kabeljou tugging on his line. Here’s Traveller24 with the story:
…it took Nortje a full 45 minutes to reel the kabeljou in and that it was unfortunately no longer alive by the time it got to the beach.
Nortje’s intense struggle and unusual catch drew a large crowd of curious onlookers from houses close by….
Nortje has no plans of turning the fish into a meal, but a trophy instead and will take it to a taxidermist in due time.
Well that’s one way to make sure no one argues the size of your catch when things are getting heated over brandewyn and biltong.
