Apple are the world’s largest company, and not by a small margin either. They are so big, in fact, that they are worth almost twice as much as Google – the second largest company in the world.
What I mean by the above is that Apple aren’t going to be pushed around by just anyone, making Taylor Swift’s latest victory one she can be rather proud of. In the wake of Apple launching their new music streaming service, Swift took a stand against the tech giants and demanded a policy change, threatening to yank her ‘1989’ album unless she saw big changes. Here’s CNN:
Swift’s issue is the three-month free trial period Apple is promoting.
“Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months,” she wrote. “I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.”
“It’s not too late to change this policy and change the minds of those in the music industry who will be deeply and gravely affected by this. We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.”
This prompted one of Tim Cook’s close allies, Eddy Cue, to take to Twitter and acknowledge their policy shift:
“#AppleMusic will pay artist for streaming, even during customer’s free trial period,” Cue tweeted, adding that “We hear you @taylorswift13 and indie artists. Love, Apple.”
Sheesh, that is rather well played young lass, you know if you’re getting the head honchos at Apple to take notice you must be doing something right. Swift said she was not alone in her sentiments, adding that she had a massive respect for Apple:
These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call.
I guess all’s well that ends well and Apple Music users can now enjoy their three-month free trial period without wondering if Swift, valued at around $200 million, is going hungry.
