Winning a gold medal for your country is something that only a select few will ever get to experience, with 21-year-old Farah Ann Abdul Hadi being one of those. Her performance at the Southeast Asian Games has been somewhat overshadowed, however, by the controversy surrounding her outfit choice.
Hadi took first place in the women’s floor exercise routine, with a Malaysian TV channel uploading this image of the beaming athlete.

The backlash was swift with many calling her out for showing her ‘aurat’ or private areas, which should remain covered according to Muslim beliefs. A Facebook page quickly sprung up in her defence, gathering 18 000 members and prompting Hadi to publicly thank her supporters.
It wasn’t long before people turned to humour and Twitter produced a few gems…
