There you sit, innocently chatting with dozens of your mates over Whatsapp, sending photographs and information back and forth. I very highly doubt you are worried about someone ever reading all your messages (I’m not talking about your crazy, jealous girlfriend).
It turns out you should be a bit more careful about what you do over Whatsapp…
The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s annual ‘Who Has Your Back?’ explains:
The ‘Who Has Your Back?’ report assesses technology companies in five criteria: whether they follow best practices for data security, whether they inform users when the government requests data, whether they are open about their policies on holding on to user data, whether they tell users when the government demands the removal of content, and whether they publicly oppose so-called backdoors which give the government access to data.
Apparently WhatsApp “failed almost every criterion”.
The ‘Who Has Your Back?’ report was “strongly critical” of the app in every criterion, and recommends “that users use Apple applications or Dropbox for IM and file exchange”.
Goodness me.
Companies like Adobe, Wikimedia, WordPress and Yahoo received high praise for their “defence of user privacy”, and Twitter and Facebook, who owns Whatsapp, were also ranked with the top contenders.
