If you are one of those people who travels with hand luggage, a laptop, a camera bag and a handbag, above and beyond your checked in luggage, then you have another thing coming… Sadly.
Here’s why:
Current hand luggage allowance measurements are 22 inches tall, 18 inches wide and 10 inches deep, and it has been said that the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is “drafting new guidelines”.
Whilst it’s going to mean you will have to go and buy a new small suitcase that fits the new regulations, it should also mean that if you’re the last to board a flight there will be space for your bag. That’s the idea behind the new sizing, anyway.
People like me tend to make a disaster of those dreams.
The new sizes will be 21.5 inches tall, 13.5 inches wide and 7.5 inches deep. The likes of Air China, Avianca, Azul, Cathay Pacific, China Southern, Emirates, Lufthansa and Qatar have already agreed to follow the new controls.
Thomas Windmuller, IATA’s senior vice president for airport, passenger, cargo and security has said that, with regards to buying hand luggage bags, “There has to be a size that if the passenger buys it, they know they can take it on board with them”.
Good luck packing, all you wanderlusters…
