I’m pretty sure we have all received THAT email, the one where a long-lost relative we never knew of has passed away and left us millions. You mourn for a second, then immediately pay the legal fees necessary to free up your untold riches – of course you do, what could go wrong?
We are wise to the fact that there are scam artists from every corner of the globe (check this oke out, or maybe you prefer your scams more dairy-focused), but we do hear a fair share coming out of Nigeria. With that in mind let’s see what News24 had to say about the happenings at the African Union (AU) summit taking place in Jozi:
A Nigerian delegate at the 25th African Union summit was robbed by men posing as Nigerian police officers in Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Thursday.
Gabriel Gundo, 55, was stopped on Marlboro Drive while coming from OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday night, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.
The robbers, driving a Hyundai, produced Nigerian police identification and took $500 and R700 from him.
We should never take pleasure in the misfortune of others, so no, nothing about this story is brilliant. It is somewhat amusing, however, that he was duped by those posing to be law enforcement from his own country having travelled all the way to South Africa. Between incidences like this and Nkandla, FIFA etc. etc. it’s sad that we’re reaching a point where it’s almost becoming laughable.
Should have come to Cape Town, chap.
