Hmmm.
This is interesting. What I see is a company trying hard to air a racially diverse advert, and then totally messing (to use a nice word) it up. And yes, whilst many are seeing it as racist, I see it as offensive to brunettes.
WHY do we always need a blonde friend?
You know what, world? Maybe the blondes need us for a change. You always say that blondes have more fun, but it’s us brunettes that are out and about doing stuff whilst all the blondes of the world are having their hair peroxided for the umpteenth time.
I digress.
Here’s the tweet, avec image.
Many have seen the tweet as “disrespectful to the black woman by whitewashing her in the description” with others thinking it “implied that a black person needs a white best friend to be ‘worthy’ of Appletiser’s standards”.
The brand has since apologised for the tweet:
Sincere apologies for offending anyone with our reference to brunettes & blue eyes, it certainly was not the intention #proudlysouthafrican
It seems that most people think the tweet “was, at best, highly misguided, confusing and patronising, and at worst, outright ignorant and racist”.
Oh, don’t even get me started on that whole “Hey there, blue eyes” thing on the bottles…
