A little disclaimer here – the above video is slightly NSFW so if a nearby work colleague is sexually repressed I suggest using headphones for this one.
So perhaps we should first be clear what this ‘camming’ we speak of entails. It isn’t rocket science but we’ll spell it out with the help of Mashable:
Camming is quickly becoming a a lucrative and relatively stable job option in modern pornography and voyerism…
[Camming superstar Kendra Sunderland] makes hundreds of dollars almost every day by stripping and pleasuring herself in front of a computer webcam while thousands of strangers watch online and tip her in order to encourage certain lascivious acts. Hosting sites split the tip money, which can range from cents to thousands of dollars.
Right, so pretty much exactly what you were thinking it would be. Although if one listens to the women in the trailer for Cam Girlz, a documentary which came out earlier this year, perhaps there is more to it than just the selling of sex. Here’s director Sean Dunne:
Camming represents a paradigm shift in adult entertainment, away from a system that upheld an industry and towards a more sustainable model that focuses on the performer…it’s the democratization (sic) of pornography.
Whilst reports vary wildly on just how much money performers are making, the owner of one of the biggest sites, the aptly named Ross A. Love, says that the top 250 performers in the world are making upwards of $100 000 (R1,26 million) per year.
Not too shabby and, unlike an awkward one night stand, if you’re not happy with how things are going you can just shut your laptop and go back to eating food in bed.
