If any of you have a fear of AI one day controlling the world, then this is not going to be good news for you. The Darpa Robotics Challenge was held in California at the weekend, and if the winning robot is anything to go buy, humans could be in trouble.
South Korea’s Team Kaist’s DRC-Hubo humanoid won the challenge – robots had to get out of a car, open a door, drill a hole in a wall, turn a valve and cross rubble either by clearing a path or walking over it – beating 22 other hopefuls, in a time of 44 minutes and 28 seconds.
The team won a $2million prize from the US Department of Defense’s Darpa research unit.
I was joking about AI taking over the world, by the way. If these robots are anything to go by, we still have a fair amount of time before we have to start worrying about I, Robot.
Can’t handle doorknob. Must fall over.
