Any one of us reading this who has lived in the UK will know exactly how common it was to see youngish looking girls walking around with their big dangling earrings and bad hair, pushing a pram overflowing with babies.
And no, this is not me painting the scene for the British version of The Babysitters Club books. It’s me describing a massive problem that the UK is facing, and here is a prime example:
What should be a lovely family photo is really quite the opposite. Let me explain.
That’s 33-year old Corrie holding her grandson. Corrie’s 17-year old daughter Bethany is on the right. Let’s let that sink in for a while and then we can proceed to the mathematics.
When Corrie was 15, she gave birth to Bathany, who is now 17, and has just had a baby. This makes Corrie (drum roll, please) one of Britain’s youngest grandmothers! What an achievement.
As I said, look at the hair.
I think the biggest concern is what Corrie has to say about her teenage pregnancy.
Having a baby so young has made me more focused and tenacious, and, now that the most demanding years of bringing up a baby are behind me, I have the freedom to enjoy the rest of my life, and, of course, my grandchild. In fact, I would go so far as to say being a teenage mum has been my greatest achievement — as I hope it will be my daughter’s, too.
Great. As if the UK needed any more teenage pregnancy encouragement.
