I think we should hop right in and let you see the advert and make up your own minds, first:
Do you think she is too thin?
The YSL advert was printed in ELLE UK, and, well, some people in the UK think she is far too skeletal and have managed to get the print ad banned by The Advertising Standards Authority.
Here’s the close up…
According to the ruling, the advert is “irresponsible”. The ASA also said the “model’s pose and the lighting effect drew attention to her rib cage, which was visible and appeared prominent”. With regards to her legs, they added that “her thighs and knees appeared a similar width, and … looked very thin,” especially the “contrast between the narrowness of her legs and her platform shoes”.
The ASA ruling is not about whether this person in the picture is healthy, but whether the images of her are being used in a way that can have an irresponsible effect on others, and we are really pleased to see that they are taking action to uphold their responsibility for the social impact of adverts
YSL does not agree with the ruling, which has forced them to pull the advert from any future publications.
