OK, so I have been told that I need to play nice about Bruce Jenner becoming Caitlyn Jenner so here goes nothing…
Now you’re probably aware that the long-running story of the Jenner / Kardashian clan leader’s switch to Caitlyn took over social media yesterday when Vanity Fair revealed their July cover story on Twitter.
There it is, shot by photographer to the stars Annie Leibovitz. The big announcement was followed by Caitlyn Jenner debuting her Twitter account, an account that smashed a record previously held by another rather public figure. Here’s Newser:
The account broke a record for fastest time to reach 1 million followers, besting President Barack Obama’s new @Potus handle with a mark of 4 hours and 3 minutes, according to Guinness World Records.
Some more quotes from Jenner:
“If I was lying on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never ever did anything about it, I would be lying there saying, ‘You just blew your entire life.'”
“Caitlyn doesn’t have any secrets…As soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I’m free.”
Right I have played nice, now indulge me just a tad. I understand that this transition, lived in the public eye and under immense scrutiny, could not have been easy. Heck, I can even agree with the millions of people who heralded the journey as brave.
My problem is the people who are lavishing praise like Jenner climbed up a burning tree and pulled down a transgender kitten. “OMG SOOOO BRAAAVE”, “the bravest thing anyone has ever done”; the Nobel Peace Prize already making its way to the Hollywood Hills.
Everyone has the right to live their lives as they please, but when they sell their story for millions (which is to say no blame on Jenner) and the world reacts as though it was some amazingly selfless act?
I’ve said too much. Congrats on the Twitter record. And, for the record, a brave decision.
