Well it had been far too quite for far too long on the statue front, I suppose it was only a matter of time.
This time it’s the Burger Monument in Burgersdorp in the Eastern Cape, which was splashed with dark green paint earlier this morning. The monument bears the image of two boers carved into the front. Leading local DA councillor Marina Van Zyl is said to believe the incident was motivated by political anger. She is quoted here on News24:
This monument was erected in 1908 before the apartheid regime. It was for the boers fighting against the coloniser, the British. So they are also freedom fighters.
Other monuments in Burger Square, pictured below, were not vandalised during this morning’s incident.
In case you have forgotten you can take a stroll down memory lane with (amongst others) the Ghandi statue, Louis Botha statue, Paul Kruger statue and that other one from UCT. Oh yes, we shouldn’t forget that mysterious statue of JZ which popped up on Lion’s Head.
Will this spark another wave of paint-throwing across the country? I guess only time will tell.
